IPS KSDE Survey

Attachments: Student Survey Resources , Teachers Survey Resources

USD 259 is partnering with Shawnee Mission, KSDE, and Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Central to conduct a study examining the implementation and student participation in Individual Plan of Study-related activities. The purpose of the study is to gain a thorough understanding of what IPS looks like in district schools and to identify which IPS activities are most related to positive student outcomes.

Study data will include online surveys for all 12th grade students, certified staff (e.g., teachers, counselors, IPS coordinators), and school administrators and leaders in Wichita Public high schools, even those who may not be directly involved in IPS. Following the study, REL Central will provide each school with a summary of their own data (describing educator implementation of IPS activities and student participation in IPS activities) that may be used to inform strategic planning related to IPS.

To support with this data collection. We are requesting your assistance with the following activities.

1. Have all building teachers complete the Educators survey during the April 15th Inservice. Ideally you will post the attached QR code during your building presentations that day. See “Teacher Survey resources” attachment. Surveys will take 5-10 minutes to complete.

2. Administer the 12th grade student surveys April 16-19 to ALL SENIORS! Ideally the attached QR code will be posted during English 4 or Advocacy. See “Teacher Survey resources” attachment. Surveys will take 10-15 minutes to complete.

3. Complete the Kansas Individual Plan of Study – School Administrator Survey (WPS) before April 19th.

Thank you so much for helping with this data collection.

KSWLA Awards

Hello, and Happy Almost March!

As we move into spring, KSWLA would like to remind you that it's time to submit your applications for the below awards. You will notice that for 2024, we are only awarding Teacher of the Year and the Alexander Award for Pre-Service Teachers. We will also choose a new Best of Kansas 2024.

Why? So glad you asked!

Due to the fact that Central States is taking place in the spring of 2025 in Kansas City, KSWLA has decided to not hold a full conference in the fall of 2024. Instead, we will host a one-day UnConference in Emporia, KS on October 19, 2024. Please expect more details in the summer. The nature of this event is concise and focused on sessions. We will hold a very brief business meeting, during which we will give out these two awards as well as recognize our Best of Kansas from the 2023 conference.

Please know that in the fall of 2025, we will bring back every award and grant that we typically give out.

If you have questions, or would like more information, please contact Rachel Benson, KSWLA Past President at: kswlapastpresident@gmail.com.

Deadline: June 1, 2024

Professional Development Council

Did you know our PDC (Professional Development Council) does more than just award PD points for in-services and trainings, which can be used for relicensure? We also have funds for conference registration reimbursements (up to $100) and for books if your school is looking to do a book study for staff professional development. Forms for both can be found in Frontline under Professional Growth in your File Library . Our PDC meets monthly to review documentation and award points and funds. Questions, contact Susan Adams @ sadams3@usd259.net or Amy Baldwin @ abaldwin1@usd259.net.

Spring Conference Interpreter Request Link

Parent Teacher Conferences are rapidly approaching. Please note our request process has changed, you will now use this link Request Form for Interpreter Services Non-SPED Related or visit bit.ly/3LaM7LX to submit your request for an regular education interpreter. We ask that you please submit your request for language support for 2023-24 spring conferences now. Open and thoroughly read the attachments, send all questions to mesinterpretations@usd259.net

Consider bilingual classified staff in your building prior to requesting interpreter support from MES. Please note that if you utilize staff in your building, you will need to send us their name and employee ID number so we can work with HR to get them processed. This process may take up to 5-7 business days; this must be completed prior to scheduling them. If they are not processed and approved through MES prior to the assignment, it will be your building funds responsibility to pay their hours worked.

PROPIO Language Services are available, and we encourage you to use their services during conferences. Propio provides support in over 200 languages. To use Propio you will need a phone. Staff may want to use their own cell phones, but we encourage them to use the district phones.

We have several languages that are hard to fill so Propio will need to be used in many cases.

Propio will assist with last minute requests or hard to fill languages requests.

Please follow the attached procedures when requesting interpreters for events, parent teacher conferences, activities, and non-SPED related activities etc.

Interpreter Request Procedures

Communicating Effectively using an interpreter Brochure

Propio usage when a translator is not available (Hard to fill requests and Language assignments)

Students should not be used as interpreters for their conference or for other students during conferences. This practice violates FERPA.

Important Facts About Instructional Coaching

Effective coaching encourages collaborative, reflective practice.

Coaching allows teachers to apply their learning more

deeply, frequently, and consistently than teachers working alone.

Coaching supports teachers to improve their capacity to

reflect and apply their learning to their work with students

and also in their work with each other.

Coaching is an embedded support that attempts to respond

to student and teacher needs in ongoing, consistent,

dedicated ways.

The likelihood of using new learning and sharing responsibility arises when colleagues, guided by a coach, work together

and hold each other accountable for improved teaching and learning.

Coaching supports collective leadership across a school

system.

Instructional Coaching Pipeline

We are excited to announce year two of the Instructional Coach Pipeline Program! This is an opportunity similar to the Aspiring Building Leader Program. The Instructional Coach Pipeline Program helps to prepare certified staff who are interested in this role prior to them applying, interviewing and being hired. Please forward the attached invitation to those you think might be interested or those you believe would do well in this role. The flyer outlines the details. We will be taking applications through October 6th. Those who participated last year do not need to re-apply as the content will be the same. If someone applied last year but did not participate, they are welcome to apply again.

have you asked your coach about what topics they have been learning about in Friday Learning Lab? This fall all secondary coaches are participating in a book study. Make sure to ask your coach which book they chose and what they are learning. We have also discussed the September Data Dive expectations, School Improvement Process, giving feedback, and coaching cycles with teachers.

The impact the instructional coach has on helping to improve instruction to support improved student outcomes is directly related to how you as the building instructional leaders work with and collaborate with your instructional coach. Please meet with your coach weekly. This time can be used in a variety of ways, but we hope you will discuss your building PL, discuss student data, and possibly even visit classrooms together.

PTC Interpreting

Parent Teacher Conferences are rapidly approaching. Please note our request process has changed, you will now use this link Request Form for Interpreter Services Non-SPED Related to submit your request for an regular education interpreter. We ask that you please submit your request for language support for 2023-24 fall conferences now.

Please thoroughly read the attachments, send all questions to mesinterpretations@usd259.net

Consider bilingual classified staff in your building prior to requesting interpreter support from MES. Please note that if you utilize staff in your building, you will need to send us their name and employee ID number so we can work with HR to get them processed. This process may take up to 3-5 business days; this must be completed prior to scheduling them.

  • Interpreter Request Procedures
  • Communicating Effectively using an interpreter Brochure
  • Propio usage when a translator is not available (Hard to fill requests and Language assignments)

Students should not be used as interpreters for their conference or for other students during conferences. This practice violates FERPA.

Please share this information with the designated conference staff.

AP Registration and Ordering Access Code for 2023-24

This is a reminder about the AP® Registration and Ordering Access Code, which we sent to AP coordinators and principals in your district on August 1. There is a unique access code for each school. Access codes shouldn’t be shared between schools.

If they haven’t already done so, AP coordinators should use their school’s unique access code to establish their access to AP Registration and Ordering for the 2023-24 school year. After using the code, the coordinators will have access to AP Registration and Ordering through July 31, 2024.

Next Steps

  1. AP coordinators need to sign in to myap.collegeboard.org.
  2. Coordinators complete setup steps, including submitting the online AP Participation Form on behalf of their school.
  3. Coordinators create class sections for all AP classes at their school (if teachers haven't already created them), and create exam only sections, if applicable. They notify AP teachers that class sections and join codes are available.
  4. Teachers share the join codes with their students so students can enroll in their classes through My AP.

Review these resources for district leaders. We've also shared information about the following resources with AP coordinators and principals:

BUILDING Data ACCESS

Please use your dashboard (under instructional roles) to add building data access for iReady, Carnegie Math, (Dreambox if you are a Newcomer building), and Reading Plus. We recommend giving this access to your data/assessment leader and instructional coach. You may also give it to assistant principals and pertinent CST members. We do not advise giving teachers building wide access but understand you may wish for some to have this possible for IEP purposes. However, it is your responsibility to make sure all use this access appropriately and follow FERPA guidelines. Classroom teachers and students are rostered through course code uploads.

ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL

Attached HERE is the assessment protocol for 23-24.

implementation of the AUTOReading screener

Students are only required to take AUTOReading if they are some risk or high risk on aReading. The following is a flowchart for the ELA screening protocol (and grouping):

  • aReading
    • Above benchmark – no further testing needed (Group 1)
    • Below benchmark – AUTOReading administered
      • AUTOReading
        • Above benchmark – no further testing needed (Group 4)
        • Below benchmark – CBM-R administered
          • CBM-R
            • Above benchmark and 95% accurate (Group 4)
            • Below benchmark but 95% accurate (Group 2)
            • Below benchmark and less than 95% accurate (Group 3)

Above benchmark is defined as low risk or CP and below benchmark is defined as some risk or high risk. The language in the Assessment Protocol will be updated to more accurately reflect that AUTOReading is not required to be administered to all students.

Additionally, since students may have to take 3 ELA screeners each window, we would suggest to conduct aReading earlier in the screener window to give time to administer AUTOReading and CBM-R for students who qualify.
